History of Castlecomer
Castlecomer is a former coal-mining town in north County Kilkenny. The name Castlecomer comes from the Irish ‘Caislean an Chumair’, which means ‘the Castle at the confluence of the Waters’, the "waters" referring to the rivers Deen, Brocagh and Cloghogue while the "castle" refers to the castle built by the Normans in 1171 on the mound opposite the gates to "Castlecomer Demesne".
Things to do in Castlecomer
One of the main attractions is Castlecomer Discovery Park. The 80-acre adventure activity park has something for all ages from little toddlers to teenagers. Castlecomer Discovery Park is open every day for the summer holidays. This year visitors can still enjoy the 80 acres of stunning woodland and lakes, adventure activities including tree top walks, Ireland’s longest zip wire and high ropes challenge, climbing walls, boating, archery, adventure playgrounds, woodland café and orienteering.
But watch out for more as this season will see lots of new activity at the park. For younger visitors, they have an entirely new activity, a net play area located near the popular junior woodland adventure course. Kids will love to play under a covered giant net area where they can bounce to their heart's content. Then it’s over to the Junior woodland adventure course which is a series of low-risk challenges where children balance and steer their way through a Junior Woodland Adventure Course, all situated inside a stunning, natural environment that’s second to none.
For parents and children, the elf and fairy village has always a huge draw, but this year we have delicious refreshments available at the Canopy Café. For coffee lovers, they serve a delicious blend of coffee called 1938, along with hot snacks and French fries, as well as daily specials. Ice creams, pastries, scones and assortment of cold drinks are also on offer.
The Soundome is a 360 surround sound based in our beautiful geodesic domes. As well as a full audio programme of classic albums. There is something here for all ages, and are especially proud to home IRELAND’S LONGEST ZIP WIRE! Now that is something to tick off the bucket list. It’s over 300 metres long and over 35 metres over the ground at its highest point. A thrilling outdoor activity the Zip Line is accompanied by two high-ropes courses called the Octagonal High Ropes Challenge. These are set in high in the woodlands with views over our two lakes.
The Tree Top Walk course nestled in the Sycamore treetops! This stunning tree top walk is 140 meters long and gives views around the 70-acre natural woodland park. Or if you want to try something a little less daunting, why not reach new heights on the great outdoor climbing wall, with varying levels for all the family to enjoy.
There is something for everyone, with 6km of walking trails, woodland orienteering trails, pedal boats, canoes, fascinating interactive coal mining exhibition telling the story of the local mining heritage. Then take a walk around the craft yard, where you can meet the craft makers and find a unique gift. Book Online at www.discoverypark.ie or call 056 4440707.
Castlecomer Golf Club is set in a 200-year-old forest of elevated beauty, with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, framed by the canopy of the woodland. Castlecomer’s course provides a great test of golf combined with breathtaking views of the local terrain. The new course layout involves no return to the higher ground when the first nine holes are completed. This has been achieved without altering the integrity of the course, each hole retaining the character and makeup. Castlecomer Golf Club offers many different packages for societies and corporate groups. For more information contact them on firstname.lastname@example.org
